Transportation Resources for Upper Kirby

The most pressing transportation changes that are being worked on currently by the city of Houston regarding the Upper Kirby neighborhood relates to the reconstruction of West Alabama Street between Buffalo Speedway and Shepherd Drive. The city is reconstructing the roadway, improving pedestrian and bicycle paths, and making improvements to the drainage alongside the road. Upgrades have been needed in this area for some time to account for improved drainage standards that have been created for city streets in Houston.

The city of Houston has also placed a renewed focus on the ability for pedestrians to be able to travel utilizing sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian lighting. The Upper Kirby neighborhood has so much to offer in terms of restaurants, activities for families and nightlife that it makes sense to be able to ensure that people are able to enjoy these activities without necessarily having to drive everywhere.

METRORapid University Corridor Project has a goal to develop a new line of METRORapid that would run for approximately 25 miles that would allow area residents to cut through traffic during the day and evening. METRORapid is a service that operates like light rail to deliver faster connections for people in specific areas of Houston. Scheduling is made available on the METRO website and can be planned by riders.

With over 16, 000 homes in Upper Kirby as of 2019, the need to constantly plan for and manage the transportation needs of this community is significant. Being in the middle of the nation’s fourth largest city only adds to the need. However, living in Upper Kirby is convenient for access to downtown and The Galleria for work purposes. Additionally, the most important roads and highways for you to be aware of when you move to Upper Kirby are Loop 610, the Southwest Freeway and streets like Kirby Drive, Buffalo Speedway and Richmond Ave.
